Quick Release Coupling
Quick Release Couplings (QRC): Reliable Hydraulic and Pneumatic Connections
Quick Release Couplings (QRCs) — are also referred to as Quick Couplers, Quick Connect Couplings, or Quick Disconnect Couplings. These QRCs are important components used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The advantage of using them are that they enable fast, leak-free, and tool-free connection and disconnection of oil, water and air lines.
At Hydrofit Engineers, we supply a complete range of Hydraulic Quick Release Couplings, Pneumatic Quick Connect Couplers, and Non-Spill QRCs. These are designed for high performance, safety, and reliability for all the relevant applications
What is a Quick Release Coupling (QRC)?
A Quick Release Coupling (QRC coupling) is a connector designed to join or separate hydraulic or pneumatic lines quickly and conveniently without causing any leakage of fluid or air.
The Quick Connector generally consists of two main parts — the male plug and the female socket (coupler). Check Valves are built within the Coupler and the plug. When the two are connected, the inbuilt check valves open to allow the flow of fluid.. When disconnected , the valves close automatically, ensuring that there is no spills of the media in the line thus maintaining the integrity of the system.
The Quick Release coupling are also know by the following names in the industry :
- Quick Coupler
- Quick Connect Coupling
- Quick Disconnect Coupling
- QRC Coupling
- QRC Connector
- Hydraulic Quick Release Coupling
Types of Quick Release Couplings (QRCs)
Based on the number of valves in the QRC the QRC couplings are classified as :
- Single Check Valve Quick Release Couplings
- Double Check Valve Quick Couplings
- Straight through Quick Couplers
Based on the way in which the Coupler and Adaptor of the QRC Coupling is connected they are classified as :
- Push to Connector Couplings
- Screw To connect Couplings
- Twist to Connect Couplings
Material of Construction of QRCs
Quick Release Couplings are generally made of the following materials :
- Carbon Steel
- Stainless Steel
- Brass
Material, Application and pressure rating
Material | Applications | Pressure Range |
Carbon Steel | General hydraulic applications | Up to 350 bar |
Stainless Steel (SS 304 / 316) | Corrosive media or environments | Up to 400 bar |
Brass | Pneumatic lines and low-pressure applications | Up to 50 bar |
The above mentioned QRCs can be supplied in sizes : ¼” to 2” BSP or NPT Threads
Working Principle of Quick Couplers
The working of a Quick Coupler is simple yet effective:
- Alignment: The male plug and female socket are aligned and pushed together.
- Engagement: The Coupler and adaptor are engaged by Locking balls and pull sleeves to secure the connection.
- Flow: When the Internal valves open, hydraulic oil, air, or fluid pass through.
- Disconnection: When the engaging sleeve is pulled the connection is released ; the inbuilt valves close immediately and the flow is cut.
Thus QRC Couplings play and important role in systems where hoses or tools need to be frequently changed, thus safety, efficiency, and saving of valuable time.

Quick release couplings for hydraulic lines, also known as hydraulic quick couplings or hydraulic quick disconnects, are essential components in various industries. They provide a convenient and efficient way to connect and disconnect hydraulic lines, allowing for quick changes, maintenance, and repairs. Here are some common types and applications of quick release couplings for hydraulic systems:
Hydraulic Quick Release Couplings are generally Double Check Valve Type and the port connections are Female to Female for both Coupler and Adaptor. These come in various types like Poppet Type Valve, Flat Face Valve. These are also available in a range of sizes ranging from 1/8″ BSP to 2″ BSP.
For general pressure applications the ISO 7241 B type couplings are used. For higher pressures the ISO 7241 A Couplers are used and for still higher pressures and where spill free disconnets are required the ISO 16028 Flat Faced Couplings are used.
HIgh Pressure Hydraulic Quick Release Couplings can be either Push to Connect Type or Screwed to Connect type Couplings. Screwed to connect type are used for very high pressure and critical applications.
The Push to Connect type QRC Couplings can be either Poppet Valve Design or Flat Face Design. Poppet Valve type are used in normal applications whereas Flat face design are used for spill free applications.
When selecting quick release couplings for hydraulic lines, it is crucial to consider factors such as pressure ratings, compatibility with hydraulic fluids, material durability, and the specific requirements of the hydraulic system. Proper maintenance and regular inspections are also essential to ensure the continued reliability and safety of hydraulic quick release couplings
Pneumatic Quick Release Couplings
